Class XXVII Graduates from Leadership Grand Strand on May 23

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The 30 participants that make up Class XXVII will graduate from Leadership Grand Strand (LGS) on Wednesday, May 23, at the Dune Beach & Golf Club. The graduation dinner will begin at 6 p.m. and the graduation ceremony will begin at 6:30 p.m.

Motivational speaker Mel Tillar will be the graduation ceremony’s keynote speaker. The ceremony will be presided over by Vicki Blair, chairman of the LGS Board of Regents.

In order for class participants to graduate LGS, they must complete a 9-month training program. Participants also need to complete a minimum of 100 hours of community service work to be eligible to graduate.

The goal of the LGS nine-month program is to develop a corps of informed, committed and qualified individuals capable of providing dynamic leadership for the Grand Strand area.

LGS is currently accepting applications for Class XXVIII and is open to any citizen who has resided in the Grand Strand area for at least one year. Candidates may be nominated by an organization or may nominate themselves. The program is limited to 30 participants, with selection reflecting the demographic, geographic and professional diversity of the Grand Strand. Candidates must reside or be employed in Horry County one year prior to admission.

Criteria for selection includes evidence of leadership abilities, potential to provide leadership to the Grand Strand, interest in community affairs, desire to expand volunteer involvement and commitment to become more involved in the Grand Strand. Participants and their sponsoring organizations must be willing to commit the necessary time to fully participate in this program and regular attendance is imperative and mandatory. Selection will be determined by an applicant's willingness to invest the time required for active participation in the program, which includes a two day retreat at the beginning of the program in September, a full day of classes the first Thursday of each month and the closing session in May.

Applications, which require three letters of reference, are due by June 30, 2007, and the new LGS session will begin in September. Applications can be found online at LeadershipGrandStrand.com and are available at any chamber welcome center. Tuition costs for LGS are $850 per person.
